Equine Casteration Post-Operative Instructions

Medications
May vary depending on the individual horse.
Your horse has received a tetanus vaccine, phenylbutazone (bute), and one dose of antibiotics that will last 4 days
No additional medication should be required unless recommended by your veterinarian
General Care
Please keep your gelding separate from any females for 2 weeks following castration
Keep him confined until the morning to prevent disruption of the blood clot
After this, turn him out and trot him for 20 minutes twice daily to encourage drainage and prevent excessive swelling
Full work can begin 2 weeks after castration
Normal Observations
Mild scrotal swelling is normal and will usually resolve in 10-14 days
Slow dripping of blood following castration is not uncommon and should resolve within a few hours
Call Your Vet If
Excessive swelling or swelling that does not resolve
Smelly discharge that looks like pus
Lameness or reluctance to move
Herniation (tissue hanging from the scrotal site)
Steady stream of blood coming from the incision site
